I get a lot of questions from the curious and/or uninitiated about what a hackerspace is. Every time I’m asked I find myself at somewhat of a loss for words. It’s not that a hackerspace isn’t definable — it’s just that it’s hard to describe what it means and why. For the purpose of answering the question, though:
A Hackerspace is a place where curious people of all trades (Security, Programming, Carpentry, Artistry, Engineering, ect…) can come together physically to work on projects together and share their knowledge with one another.
People so rarely enjoy that explaination — They want to know what one does at such a place. Does one break into computers? I usually point to a few examples around our space:
It’s a massive shared venture where people start building things and never stop. They can’t just do one project because it’s addictive working together with people to build tangible objects or perfect skills. You don’t even have to know anything, you just have to be willing to learn from any of the talented people swarming around your local hackerspace. Don’t be scared to go in because you don’t know something. Instead, go because you want to learn something.
A Hackerspace is a place where people come to obsess, work, play, melt, build, destroy, fix, break, repurpose and/or abuse everything from toasters to arduinos to software and programming languages. Stop by and see how we work. Open House nights are on Wednesdays at 7:00pm.
